Client Requirement
Golf Today program has been delivering its content via a web portal. The requirement was to develop a modern, easy to use intuitive web application using the latest technologies to be compatible with modern-day devices and environments. Simplifying the navigation and layouts was another requirement by the client while making them mobile responsive.
Additionally, it was required to easily manage the content from an admin portal, so the course materials and related structures could change effortlessly by backend staff. Further, the significance of direct delivery of the content to mobile applications was identified, which enables the students to refer to the material while they are in the field.
Challenges in the Business Process
This web portal was equipped with a large member base who are used to the existing navigation and layout. Hence the new adaption was doubtful, and expected that the current users would not enjoy the new change. To manage this scenario, core system design had to persevere where the existing users could still be comfortable. Hence, the user journeys, experiences, and terminology had to be retained to some extent while making the presentation more modern and intuitive.
Furthermore, an extremely tight deadline was set to deliver the solution. The client registered new users via an offline event, where the developers agree on a set of features to be completed first. Reaching to an agreement on the initial scope was challenging when considering the technical feasibility of implementing certain components of the system prior to others.
Challenges in Technology
The existing user base of the system was from all around the world, with a large amount of user-generated content and training material in the system with different localizations. Transferring them into the new system was challenging without any data losses or mixups during the transfer. The transferring, processing and managing became much more complex as most of the contents featured in the system are video-based so that content could have the maximum reach.
Lastly, enabling the videos to play on any kind of device was a challenge due to certain devices/OS's not complying with the standards. Here, special testing procedures and content preparations were performed for the content to have the maximum reach.
Challenges in Delivery
The biggest challenge the team had to face with delivery is meeting the deadlines. Due to a promotional event organized for a specific date, it was required to meet that deadline one way or the other. With the requirement to have the apps launched and available in the market places by that time, the delivery team had to put in extra hours after office hours and weekends. Since the team was on a tight deadline, there was no room for error at all. With great focus and attention to detail, the team managed to get everything delivered on time with the required reliability and quality.
Another serious challenge was making thousands of video files secured, transcoding for different device capabilities and bandwidth availability, and getting all possible scenarios tested before pushing the solution to its production environment.
Final outcome
Since 2015, the Golf Today platform has been improved, operated, and serviced by Fidenz Technologies, and even to date, we are working on additional functionality to the system. Meantime, we are proud to announce that the solutions have managed to draw the attention of a younger generation to get the membership due to the state of the art of the mobile application.
